EV Maintenance

Independent EV Service You Can Trust

You don’t need a dealership to keep your electric vehicle in top condition. At Leos Service Station, we’ve been serving Austin drivers since 1963, and today that includes the growing number of EV owners in our community. Our technicians are experienced with the unique maintenance needs of electric vehicles, and we service all makes and models—Tesla, Rivian, Chevy Bolt, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, BMW iX, Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan Leaf, and more.

Bringing your EV to an independent shop like Leos means faster turnaround, transparent pricing, and the personal attention of a family-owned business—without the dealership markup.

What Maintenance Does Your EV Actually Need?

Fewer moving parts mean lower overall maintenance costs, but “lower maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” Here are the key service areas every EV owner should stay on top of:

Tires — EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, which causes tires to wear faster than on comparable gas-powered vehicles. Regular rotation, balancing, and alignment checks extend tire life and maintain safe handling. We carry and install tires suited for the weight and performance demands of electric vehicles.

Brakes — Regenerative braking reduces pad wear, but the hardware still needs periodic inspection. Brake fluid should be checked every few years, and calipers should be cleaned and lubricated to prevent corrosion. We perform thorough brake inspections to make sure your stopping power is always there.

Cabin Air Filters — Every EV pulls outside air through cabin filters to keep the interior clean. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every one to two years. In Austin’s pollen-heavy climate, more frequent changes can make a noticeable difference in air quality and HVAC performance.

Wiper Blades & Washer Fluid — Texas heat degrades rubber quickly. Annual wiper replacement ensures clear visibility during sudden downpours, and we’ll top off your washer fluid while we’re at it.

12V Battery — Every electric vehicle has a standard 12V battery that powers accessories, lights, and onboard computers. These can fail just like in any car and should be tested as part of regular maintenance.

Coolant Systems — EVs use coolant to regulate battery and motor temperatures. While it doesn’t need changing as often as in gas cars, coolant levels should be monitored and topped off during routine service.

Texas EV Registration: What You Need to Know

As of January 2025, Texas no longer requires annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles. Fully electric vehicles are also exempt from the emissions testing still required for gasoline vehicles in Travis and Williamson Counties. Your EV registration renewal is straightforward—just pay the standard registration fee (which includes a $7.50 inspection replacement fee) plus the $200 annual EV surcharge.

Even without a state-mandated inspection, we recommend a periodic multi-point safety check to catch potential issues early—especially tire wear, brake condition, and lighting.
