Tesla (EV) Breathalyzer Installations

Why Tesla Breathalyzer Installation Requires Specialized Experience

Installing an ignition interlock device on a Tesla is more complex than on a traditional gas-powered vehicle. Tesla’s advanced electrical architecture, keyless entry system, and software-driven controls create unique challenges that many standard IID installers aren’t prepared for. Some shops will turn Tesla owners away entirely, and others may attempt the installation without the right experience—risking damage to your vehicle’s electronics.

At Leos Service Station, our technicians understand Tesla’s wiring systems and have hands-on experience installing interlock devices on Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. We take the time to do the job right, ensuring your IID integrates properly without affecting your vehicle’s performance, warranty, or onboard systems.

How EV Breathalyzer Installation Works

An ignition interlock device, also known as a car breathalyzer, connects to your vehicle’s ignition circuit and requires a breath sample before the vehicle will start. On a Tesla, this means interfacing with the car’s electronic systems rather than a traditional mechanical ignition. The process typically takes two to four hours due to the complexity of EV wiring, but our goal is to get it done efficiently while ensuring everything functions correctly.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Set up your account with LifeSafer or Intoxalock—they’ll coordinate the device order and legal paperwork.
  2. Schedule your installation at Leos by calling (512) 926-4110. Plan for a two to four hour appointment.
  3. Our technician installs the IID, connects it to your Tesla’s ignition circuit, and calibrates the device.
  4. You’ll receive hands-on training to make sure you’re comfortable using the device before you leave.
  5. Return to Leos for required calibration and monitoring appointments—typically every 30 to 67 days.
